Roger Dale Marion June 13th, 1949- March 7th, 2004 The reason we do the show, and why it is for the American Diabetes Association
|
The reason we do our show and why it is a family
show, is because of the man, I call Dad. My father was
fifty four years old, when complications from diabetes
took him from us so early. My family and I wanted to do
something that is a tribute and yet a fundraiser all in the
same event. My dad was in love with the old cars for as
long as I could remember , when I was a younger kid my
Uncle Steve bought a 1969 Camaro, which my uncle and
dad built to race at Thompson. My dad took great pride
in working with my uncle and taking his turns at driving.
We also showed that car at the Cleveland Auto Rama.

Through the years my father had many "project
cars". The worst one being a 1948 Ford Coupe. That
car was horrible, it had a hole in the floor that you
could shoot a basketball through, the fenders were
fallin off and it had no paint. We had to trailer it
home. My only question to him was "Does mom know
it looks like this?" He did not answer me . When we
got home I found out that she had not seen the car
either. But proudly both them stood next to the car for
the before picture. He smiled just like he had won the
lottery. But unfortunately time had won that battle and
he sold it. It was not long before he had another car.
It was a 1964 Thunderbird. That car was driveable. It
had a 390 and what I found to be the coolest thing I
had ever seen on a car was the tilt away steering
wheel.
The last of my father's cars is a 1963 Chevrolet Impala
, 2 door hard top. The car has a 350 small block which
he replaced. When he bought the car it had a 327. It is
still in the family. My mom ownes it and my uncle and I
do the the maintenace and the up keep. I hope that it
will be in our family for a long time. I will always
remember the trips to Annabells and the other various
car shows we went to, it seemed that with every car we
looked at my dad knew someone or had one when he
was younger or almost had a car like that. I hope with
the help of my family and friends that I can continue to
do the car show for the American Diabetes Association,
so that some day we can find a cure for this disease. I
would like to take this opportunity to thank past
participants and sponsors for making the show a
success year after year, my family and friends for all
their help, but most of all my parents who introduced us
to what my dad called "culture". That was oldies
music(real Rock-N-Roll) and old cars. Thank you all see
you in 2010.
Marty
P.S. Tell Papaw I love and miss you guys.
